Nigeria's labor union accuses authority of
neglecting the education sector
Nigerian labor claims that the government has broken promises and that the country's authorities have ignored the education sector for a very long time.
Ayuba Wabba, the president of the
Nigerian Labor Congress, and a few activists joined hundreds of demonstrators
against the ongoing closure of Nigerian colleges on Wednesday in Abuja.
After gathering at the Unity Fountain
in Abuja, the demonstrators marched to the National Assembly while shouting
songs of unity and holding banners with varied messages.
The country's public university system
has remained closed for five months, according to the labor union, which adds
that there is no justification for this to continue.
"We are here to express our
displeasure with the state of the nation's educational system. They are likely
aware that the university system in Nigeria has been closed for five months,
and I'm certain that the impacted kids are those from the working class, the
underprivileged, and the destitute "explained Wabba.
Sen. Mohammadu Wudil, head of the House
committee on labor, addressed the demonstrators and gave the labor union the
assurance that parliamentarians will meet with all parties involved in the
situation.
"You have presented your requests,
and I am confident that the president is aware that we have something to say to
demonstrate our support for every Nigerian. We thus resolve to ensure that this
chamber convenes the labor minister, the labor union, and all other parties
concerned as soon as possible for a discussion "Added he.
